Desi in farfurie am o recolta tare bogata 🙂 , “Recolta” lui Jim Crace nu are nimic dulce in ea.

jim Crace Harvest book review[EN] Although I have a rich harvest in my plate 🙂 , Jim Crace’s book “Harvest” has nothing sweet in it.

Harvest is a book that I have read with patience, although it annoyed me. And I didn’t even know why, until the end. It was because of the male narrator, the main character, who goes through hell in such a masculine way that is really annoying: it is a male perspective almost entirely, women are rather dark creatures in this book, they are treated like witches and I was intrigued by this lack of acknowledging women almost at all.

Bine, trecut. Ați înțeles voi.

[EN] Don’t get this wrong, the book is cool and interesting and this omnipresent male point of view is what makes it even more entertaining and fascinating. What the author does is, in a way, natural – since he is a man, but it is also a stylistic practice that is to be envied. Jim Crace managed to place a lot of female characters in Harvest, but he gives them no voice and little personality. Women are and aren’t really there.

Maybe this is why all tragedies in the book are rather objectively described than actually felt. They are told in a distant manner, they do not seem to alter too much Thirskˈs inner life – Walter (Walt) Thirsk is this main character I am dissecting now. His social life changes completely, he faces unfortunate events that challenge the entire village, but he accepts them as such and moves on, leaving it all behind like nothing ever happened. Thirsk acts natural, that is for sure, even if we are to talk about happiness or horror, about what we’d be tempted to classify as ”normal” or not.
As said, Harvest is about the rise and fall of a small community – more about its falling, in fact. And I had no idea where the action takes place, but it seems to be a dystopian village, with few remains of a happier future. Well, past. You get it.

Cartea o gasiti la editura All. 🙂

[EN] At some point, the peak is made out of grotesque images: it all falls apart, the whole community has sex, each in their dirty home, and the background is filled with blood and drama, with not guilty people who get to be punished and eaten by pigs, fires that threaten the village, getting high on mushrooms, crimes and murders. It is like the history of mankind on fast forward: first people show up, they get to know sin, they harm each other, they suffer and die, then they all vanish and everything is on fire until no trace of human existence.
In the end, I was surprised to find that the narrator says what I had already noticed: what he leaves behind is a Garden of Eden without any Adam or Eve. I would strongly recommend this book especially to women, but not only – I am really curious whether it will annoy you as much as it annoyed me or if you will find inside you some understanding and appreciation for Thirsk. If you read it, I’m super curious about your opinion on it, so feel free to comment bluntly. 🙂
